Many of you commented during our meet the teacher night about how to best support children on their maths journey!
We are so happy to hear that families are excited to be involved in and participate in the math learning.
Math Skills and Vocabulary Support:
Grade 5 students work on IXL to practice their math skills (it is equal to our workbook). It is also a place to pick out new math vocabulary to support our mathematical discussions.
Students have a Think Tank notebook to show their thinking and calculations done on IXL .
Mathematical Problem Solving:
We strongly believe that working through rich problems helps our students develop critical thinking and reasoning skills that will help them to solve real-world problems. We use the exemplars rubric to help assess the variety of strategies necessary to become powerful problem solvers.
As you work at home with your child on the Brain Teasers please keep in mind the purpose and the strategies (especially communication and connections).
Math Mindsets:
What the world has learned about brain growth and development has led to a deeper understanding of the importance of mindsets in learning. We have also learned that working away at math tasks a little bit more regularly is more productive than working on it for a long time right before a due date. For that reason, we give plenty of time for students to accomplish most math tasks at home - they should break down the task and accomplish it in smaller chunks of time.
Here is a great series of videos and information for parents about growth mindsets:

Here is a VERY interesting read about how our adult mindsets can transfer unknowingly to the students or our children:

- They are also highly encouraged to write down calculations AND math vocabulary in their Think Tank books.
- We hope that students and families are taking time to look up definitions and find examples (translate if necessary) of the vocabulary words to help expand their mathematical vocabulary usage this year.

- Have fun and break the task down into small workable time chunks.
- Do not hesitate to encourage your child to ask for support from us, if the task is unclear
- Enjoy the confusion and the unknown while you learn together.
- Celebrate growth and effort!
